Broomhead Moor & Ewden Beck

This Peak District walk is another route close to the western outskirts of Sheffield. The walk explores one of the valleys that run eastwards towards the Don - in this case the Ewden Beck. The start is close to Broomhead Hall.

Description

(S)There is off-road parking for about 10 cars opposite Broomhead Hall on Mortimer Road at grid ref. SK241962. From here take Bradfield Path no. 4 towards Ewden Beck. Keep on the moors track, rather than taking the footpath off to the right, and carry on along the southern side of the Ewden Beck valley. After a mile and a half you will pass a shooting lodge, the path turns to the south then you walk past 8 grouse butts.

(1)At this point the moor track ends and you need to follow a faint path heading south east along Rushy Dike. If in doubt keep high & to the left of the dike. After a quarter of a mile you will see and then meet the Dukes Road path more or less at the point that it crosses the dike.

(2)Turn left on the Dukes Road from which you can see down the Agden Dike valley to the Agden Reservoir. At Mortimer Road turn left then right on Bradfield Path no. 10 which goes down and past Old Booth Farm to Lee Lane. Cross the road onto a new bridleway (since 2014) and descend down through the woods to Rushy Lane - and old road that is now a bridleway.

(3)Turn left on Rushy Lane then left on Allas Dike Lane - another old road and current bridleway - that heads through the woods towards Allas Lane. Just before reaching Allas Lane, go left then right through the trees to Wigtwizzle - site of Wigtwizzle Hall until 1923 - turn right on the road then off left on Bradfield Path no. 99.

(4)The footpath crosses the track to Broomhead Hall - the old hall was demolished in 1980 - goes over the bridge, passes markers in the field then goes to the right of Broomhead Hall before going left around the farm and out on the Hall road to the car parking on Mortimer Road.(E)

Varied terrain,good identifiable tracks, no difficulty with . ascents and descents . Lovely views even on the overcast, windy day we had. Very enjoyable.

Excellent low level walk around two reservoirs offering great views and not being too far from the centre of Sheffield and finding yourself in beautiful countryside.

Mapping and walk description were excellent. A non too challenging walk, great for us older trekkies who suffer with the knees!

We did the walk on a overcast but warm day. The parking was in by the side of a road although location not so easy to determine.After the slow climb to the shooting lodge it was downhill all the way to the reservoir with great views of the vale. Some of the party did struggle towards the end climbing back up to the car although I would not grade this walk differently to the originator.

We did not have the benefit of an OS Map, big mistake. It took an hour to find the start point, having driven past it at least twice. On the ground there no sign could be found marking the presence of Broomhead Hall and the 10 car parking spots on Mortimer Rd were not obvious due to the mucky condition of the verges. In the end having seen a sign for Broomhead Farm we decided it must be the start area.
Then the route description was to take Bradfield Path No 4. On the ground we could see no signs designating the foootpath numbers. So it was a real act of faith when we started the walk and due to our poor understanding of the start point location we ended up doing the walk in reverse!
Also beware a number of sections were temporarily closed and the route was lacking in signs.
We felt the route was crossing Mortimer Road, but this was not referred to at all in the instructions nor was Mortimer Rd, location of the start, marked on the map.

Including some quiet paths and tracks, the route also visits the popular summit of Back Tor and the monument to the Lost Lad. This valley is particularly impressive and feels quite remote - considering how close it is to the thousands of people that are circuiting around Ladybower.

Thurgoland Boundary Walk from Oxspring

The Thurgoland Boundary Walk is just under nine miles long and takes in part of the upper Don valley as well as some of the tributaries of the river Dove. The route includes a short section on the old Dove Valley railway above the Silkstone tunnels and the route crosses the old Woodhead rail route twice.

This walk follows a section of the Barnsley Boundary Walk and explores the countryside to the west of this town. The route also includes Wharncliffe Crags which offer some fine views.

Worrall, Sheffield to Combes Farm round

A short walk in a rural area close to Sheffield along footpaths. Reasonably signposted but care is needed to keep on track. Apt to be muddy. Sheep, horses and sometimes cattle are likely to be encountered.

Bamford & Stanage Edges from Rod Side

This Peak District walk explores two of the gritstone edges in the eastern sector of the National Park. The walk generally follows well defined paths and tracks and offers some fine views from elevated positions along the way. After heavy rain do expect some boggy ground under foot along some sections of the route.
