Description

(S)Exit the car park and walk north into the village. Go past the campsite and the National Park information centre on your right and then take the signed footpath to Ollerbrook Booth, which also on your right. Follow the waymarked route through the buildings at Ollerbrook Booth and, still heading east, cross more fields on the path to Nether Booth Farm. After passing Cotefield (on your left) turn left at the footpath junction (grid ref SK133859). This leads you uphill with the path following the edge of Open Country to reach the Youth Hostel at Rowland Gate (grid ref SK140865). Signs direct you on to the path towards Clough Farm, where some careful navigation is required to stay on the route. As a general comment bear left and providing you stay on a path you can't really go too wrong.

(1)The path climbs again to enter Open Country and continues its ascent across open moorland to enter Jagger's Clough. Continue on the main track to climb up onto the ridge linking Win Hill with the Kinder Plateau (grid ref SK159876). From here you get your first view north towards the Derwent Valley and the surrounding high moorland. You can make a short diversion south to Hope Cross, which stands on the route of the old Roman road that originally linked Hope to Glossop. There are a number of paths at this important junction and it is important that you locate the right one, which is the clear track heading northwest onto Crookstone Hill.

(2)The track soon reduces to a footpath, which turns southwest across Crookstone Out Moor becoming a well trodden path along the southern edge of Kinder. The views across Edale to the Castleton Ridge are excellent. The going is fairly level and you need to have map in hand ready to identify where you cross Ollerbrook Clough (grid ref. SK129874). Since the OS 1:25000 map was surveyed a number of additional fences have been constructed in this vicinity so careful navigation is necessary. However the general aim is to leave the edge path as it continues towards Golden Clough and Grindsbrook, and follow the small ridge southwest to the rocky prominence of Ringing Roger (grid ref. SK125872). This is best by keeping to the ridge and using the stiles to cross the new fences.

(3)From Ringing Roger you get a bird's eye view of Grindsbrook and Edale. You can also plot your route into the valley as the path used for the descent as it zigzags down to the Nab and continues into the Grindsbrook valley. Once you join the main valley path, bear left, cross the footbridge, pass the Old Nags Head (the start or finish of the Pennine Way) and follow the lane back down to the start.(E)

Useful Information

This walk explores the quieter eastern section of the Kinder Plateau. The route starts from the main car park in Edale (grid ref. SK124853). There is also a public transport option with Edale station served by trains on the Manchester and Stockport to Sheffield route. The walk begins by using field paths linking the farms of the Edale Valley before climbing onto the moors of Kinder.

This is a fairly challenging walk, with a steep climb at the start of the route via the Nab and Ringing Roger, but it is very rewarding.

Provides spectacular views over the valley leading into Edale via Jacobs Ladder and finishes at the Rambler Inn / Penny Pot Cafe for refreshments at the end of the walk. Worth taking a map or having OS maps on your phone, because can be tricky at times to ensure you are following the correct paths.

Can recommend!

I ended up doing this walk the 'wrong' way around as the description says to take the footpath on the right after the Tourist Info centre signposted to Ollerbrook Booth, but this signpost actually only says "Footpath" so I didn't take it and ended up starting the track just past the Nags Head (Start of the Pennine Way) which lead over the stream via the narrow wooden bridge and then up to Ringing Roger. However it offered amazing views across to the Castleton Ridge the whole way and we were glad that we did the ascent up Ringing Roger early on before we were more tired! On our way back to Edale at Clough Farm the track got a little confusing again, I guess I should have taken the path signposted to the YHA. But after this the only way to follow the GPX route would have been to walk through a fence with a 'Private' sign on it. Eventually the 'official' track met our path as we walked through the farms before emerging back in Edale at the signpost that you say reads "Ollerbrook Booth" but actually just says "Footpath". I notice that the GPX route is not always 100% spot on the tracks but it gives a good estimation of the route. Thank you for this walk I can't wait to try the walks West of Edale now including Edale Cross and Jacobs Ladder!

A lovely walk - great views and not too busy. Only issue was finding the path after Cotefield. If you turn left and head uphill at the Open Country sign the path becomes more evident as you head up the field. If you pass Woodhouse farm on your left you have gone too far.

Hi, I am scared of heights, especially paths where there is a visible drop one the side(s). Would this walk be unsuitable? Thank you

A lovely walk with great views.
The turn off the tar road in the beginning is only marked Grindsbrook but at the booth you turn up to the right and find the track leading to The Nab once you have crossed the stile leading out of the field.
The split is not signposted but once you have done this the track is quite clear. An OS map really helped with this.
Once you reach the main path on the ridge it is broad and clear.

Dear Sara,

Thanks for getting in touch. I believe that it was at the following section that they had some trouble:

"After passing Cotefield (on your left) turn left at the footpath junction (grid ref SK133859). This leads you uphill with the path following the edge of Open Country to reach the Youth Hostel at Rowland Gate (grid ref SK140865). Signs direct you on to the path towards Clough Farm, where some careful navigation is required to stay on the route. As a general comment bear left and providing you stay on a path you can't really go too wrong."

If you use the grid references, you should be fine, but any feedback on the walk would be most welcome (or photos if you take any)

Hope you enjoy the walk!

Hello Sarita.

We are thinking of doing this walk next weekend. Can you clarify if the tricky bit where someone ended up down the YHA track is where you have written "There are a number of paths at this important junction and it is important that you locate the right one, which is the clear track heading northwest onto Crookstone Hill"?

Just hoping we can follow your instructions, and preempting potential problems!!

Thanks

Sara

Thanks for your feedback on this walk. If you could let me know how you suggest rephrasing the walk description, I can make those changes so the walk is clearer for future walkers We also welcome photos, if you would like to post any of this walk Sarita

Bit tricky to follow the route at the beginning. we missed a turning somewhere and ended up on the drive of the YHA so then took a left to walk up it. Reaching the junction of the Roman road at the top on the moor, a handy "take a left" would of been useful. Overall though, an excellent walk and a good length with epic views!
