Description

(S/E)The route starts from the village of Fleggbrough (also known as Burgh St Margaret) which is located on the A1064 between Yarmouth and Acle. Parking is available at the village hall (grid ref. TG445139) which is located on the south side of the main road through the village. After parking exit the car park and walk to your left and take the path on your left. This crosses a field alongside a playing field and reaches a road after approximately 500 metres (grid ref. TG447134). Turn right into Silver Street which soon becomes Beech Lane. Walk past Pound Lane on your right and continue to reach a footpath on your left (grid ref. TG44133).

(1)This path leads across fields initially heading south before turning right to reach a lane (grid ref.TG440131). Continue down this lane past Willow Farm after which the lane becomes a track. Continue for a further 600 metres from the farm to reach a footpath on your left (grid ref. TG435126). Turn left here and follow the path along New Muck Fleet Drain bearing right where the path heads south.

(2)The path initially follows a drain but joins a clear track at grid ref. TG436118. Follow this track south and then west through woodland at Alder Carr. Reaching the end of the woodland at a T-junction continue ahead on the path across the field to join the access road for Whitegate Farm which is to your right. Turn left down this access drive and after 350 metres take the signed footpath on your right. The path goes left at the end of the first field and continues with the field boundary on your immediate left before heading half right across the field to reach a cul-de-sac (Croft Hill). Continue down this road to reach the main road through Stokesby where refreshments are available.

(3)Turn right along the main road and after 150 metres turn left to join the path alongside the River Bure, which is usually busy with leisure craft. Walk past the Commission Drainage Mill (sadly without sails) and a short distance after Muck Fleet drain which comes in from the right (grid ref. TG421104). Leave the path along the River Bure at this point and walk north on a concrete track to a lane (grid ref. TG421109). Cross the lane and continue following the path alongside Muck Fleet drain which will be on your right to reach New Road (grid ref. TG421116).

(4)Cross the road and continue north with Muck Fleet drain on your right for just over a mile to re-join the outward route. Continue past Willow Farm and turn right onto the footpath to reach Beech Lane. Turn right and then bear left onto the footpath past the playing fields to reach the main road through Fleggbrough with the car park a short way along the main road to your right.

Loved this walk - it showcases the edge of Filby Broad, a beautiful and picturesque Norfolk Village and a vast expanse of marshland along the dyke.
